Golf Channel Analyst Says Tiger Woods Should be Lynched
Kelly Tilghman, a former golfer for Duke University and now a play-by-play analyst for The Golf Channel, said some things on air that would have made Don Imus and Bill O'Reilly blush.
During a telecast of the PGA Tour's opening event, Tilghman said that today's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."
According to Newsday, a spokesman for the Golf Channel said that Tilghman apologized during Sunday's broadcast and has "reached out to Woods' representatives to express regret for the comments."
"I've reached out to Tiger to make an apology, and I've done the same with our viewers," Tilghman said.
"I can assure you that there was never any intention to offend anyone. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding."
The Golf Channel representatives have stated that they plan no disciplinary action.

Bill Bennet (abort all black babies to reduce crime); Imus (nappy headed hoes); Richards (n-word and put a fork up his butt); O'Reilly (where should I start) now this valley girl from Duke University who just became the first woman to break the PGA glass ceiling. Freudian slips tell you how people TRULY FEEL.
These racist motherfuckers keep getting away with this shit. That's bullshit. Notice that the girl came out of Duke.
Tiger Woods is such a sellout that he probaly should be lynched.
She must be reprimanded by the Golf Channel. There is no excuse for such a careless use of words. I'm disgusted this has not gotten the same press as other errand shots at the African-american community. I wonder what press would be like if Robbin Roberts made a statement about Morgan Pressel saying, the young female golfers should starve and burn her in an alley. Kelly Tilghman's actions must be addressed and accounted for. I'm sorry will not do.
The Golf Channel is a bunch of racist bastards. I can't believe they let this crap happen and didn't do anything about it!
"Charge it to her head . . . and not to her heart." At least I am sure that is what Jesse Jackson would say about her comment.
Clearly this is an epidemic as the other writer noted. When will it end. If a black on-air personality said something like this about a white woman, he would be fired, period. From Macaca, to Nappy Headed Hoes, etc. This is all onesided. I don't see any black people saying these kind of things toward whites. This hatred must end.
What if someone said that a jewish golfer should be sent to a concentration camp? Would that dude be able to keep his job?
No. Anti-defamation league would be all over his butt. Thank goodness (if you are not away) after civil rights organization stated they will protest if not fired, espn suspended her. Still it is not enough and the Black Action Network and others need to protest the Golf Channel until she is removed, sensitivity training is in place and they hire people who are PROFESSIONAL.
I just wanted to comment that I am glad that Tiger Woods is above letting himself get pulled into the political dramas that seemd to unfold everytime someone opens thier mouth.
Lynching has long been associated with the Old West long before racism entered the picture.
I really wish people would relax and take a deep breath and realize not everything needs to be politcally correct.
I look and these anonymous comments and the language and anger issues as more dangerous than the word "lynch"
Oh that's bullshit! If you use the word "lynch" in reference to a black person, you are clearly messing up!
If I use the words "concentration camp" about a jewish guy, I can't just say "Well, concentration camps came into existence before Jews." I would get fired.
God i am glad i am not on the air. I know i have no racist feelings in my heart, but i promise you, i would say the wrong thing at the wrong time and i would be labeled racist the rest of my life. Relax people, relax. Not everything you here is meant in a harmful way.
I am african american and I am posting on yourblacksports. We would be terrible upset if there was a internet site called yourwhitesports. There are certain words you should not use in regards to an opposite race, but to fire a young women from her career forever is crazy. Lighten up my brothers.
I am sick of this, grow up stuff happens. I am sure black people never slip up and say stuff about whites. Woods is not even black, anybody can be lynched even white people. But I do agree that starting with the black folks is a good start.
i read the comments posted and they make me sick. all i hear is how the blacks are mistreated. the blacks have Ms black america, the black caucus, black entertainment television, etc. etc. yet you are the first to scream racism when a white organization shows up. you really need to see who is discriminated against in america. kelly did nothing wrong. grow up if you can.
It is extremely unfortunate that race continues to be an issue in the land of opportunity. However, it is unrealistic to say that race is not an issue in America because it certainly is. It would be excellent if there were no races but African Americans were not the folks that initiated the racial divide and they can't be expected to end it.
The fact that we are sometimes somewhat sensitive to various comments has everything to do with the fact that as a race we have been denegrated and demeaned throughout my lifetime. Obviously things are much better but to use Black and Lynch in the same sentence is unacceptable. I wonder where she learned this word. I hope not at Duke.
This was a verbal lynching. Maybe someone should joke about lynching the girl!
Ease up every body I sure she didn't mean it way it came out the choice of words was inappropriate because Tiger happen to be black. Listen to her words Tiger is so much better than the other golfer the only way they could beat him is to !!!!! him in a back alley. I'll take that as a great complement. Even black do not use that word we may say hang
Someone sent this to me on email:
Lynching, hanging or other types of executions, in punishment of a presumed criminal offense, carried out by self-appointed commissions or mobs, without due process of law. The term lynching is generally believed to be derived from the name of a Virginia justice of the peace, Charles Lynch, who ordered extralegal punishment for Tory acts during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Frontier settlements in the United States often lacked established law enforcement agencies and, instead, exercised summary justice through vigilantes. Western pioneers punished murder, rape, horse thievery, and other capital crimes by resorting to lynching.
Even before the American Civil War (1861-1865), many lynchings took place in Southern states. The violence was usually directed at members of the abolitionist movement or others who worked to end the system of slavery. After the war lynching became a method of terrorism against black people in the South. During the period of Reconstruction, the Ku Klux Klan used lynching to intimidate freed blacks who were voting and assuming political power in many parts of the South. A comprehensive study of vigilante violence estimated that the Klan carried out more than 400 lynchings in the South during the period from 1868 to 1871. Often blacks were lynched because they were presumed to have committed crimes against white people. Investigations by journalist Ida B. Wells showed that in many cases the crimes were exaggerated or did not occur at all. Starting in 1882, when records of lynchings began to be kept, most lynchings occurred in Southern states; after 1886 the number of black victims annually exceeded the number of white victims. Georgia and Mississippi had the largest totals of lynchings; the six New England states had none. From 1882 to 1968 more than 4,700 persons were lynched in the United States, and the majority of them were black. The largest number of lynchings in any one year was 230 in 1892. After World War I (1914-1918), lynching declined considerably. In the 1960s, however, several persons attempting to secure civil rights for blacks in the South met death through the actions of lynch mobs.
In 2005 the United States Senate formally apologized to lynching victims and their descendants for the Senate’s failure to pass antilynching legislation during the 19th and 20th centuries. Senator Mary Landrieu, a Democrat of Louisiana, was the main sponsor of the legislation.

So with Obama running for President, it is just a coincidence that more nooses and comments about lynching are coming to fruition? (interesting)
I know black people haven't been lynched for many decades now, and none of us have been lynched. But this white devil needs to realize is that we are a sensitive people. You can't go around saying stuff that might offend us cause we ain't white and it's harder for us. If anyhting, we should get special treatment and priveledges. It's been long enough that whitey's had the good life when's our turn?
Yeah: Ask the late James Byrd from Jasper, TX after he was dragged by a rope to a back of a car in 1998 and was decapitated.
Lynching still occurs, it might not be reported readily by CNN, Fox News, MsNBC but it STILL EXISTS.
I'm Sorry this happened. It brings back memories to the forefront of my thoughts when, though not forgotten, they were certainly not something I've thought about on a regular basis. Poor choice of words, Feudian slip, I don't know. I wouldn't care to attempt to understand what Ms Tilghman was thinking nor her thoughts on blacks in general. I certaining hope we all take care in the words we use on a daily basis and in the company we keep, for we never know whose listening.
This whole situation is a complete mess. It saddens me that people behave this way in 2008
Tilghman and Woods are reportedly friends and participate together in off camera promotions, events, etc. Malice, no, poor choice of words, yes. Intent is everything. Don't be intellectually lazy and broad brush mistakes as intent to harm. Go find discrimnation where it really exists.
How about you idiots can an education instead of dwelling on the past and what people say and taking it out of context. I'm tired of all these comments that are racially sensitive and taking completely the wrong way! If you want justice and want to fight the "white man", get educated and become an impact to society with your mind not with your absurd, I'm black and therefore the underdog in this white driven society----
it is obvious that you are the perpetual son of willie f lynch, your opinion shows that you are the very black man that all blackmen need to deal with if we are ever going to rid our communities of SELLOUTS! Maybe you might feel better telling the modern day institutional plantation owners"MASSA OUR HOUSE IS BURNING OR MASSA WE SICK, WAKE UP SELLOUT, YOU ARE NOT FRENCH.....
Lighten up, If Tiger doesn't care why should we.
This is bigger than being about Tiger. It's about the fact that this white woman feels that it's ok to talk about lynching a black man. If I call my wife a stupid bitch and say that I should rape her in a back alley, that is an assault to all women, even if my wife doesn't get offended.
The word "lynching" is never used in conjunction with a white person. This lady definitely needs to be removed from her position.
Additionally, the ignorant person who stated that Tiger is a sellout is the ignorant mentallity that stops people like Obama from getting in office. "Crabs in a jar mentality" I know that this person has never spoken with or personally met Tiger Woods. IGNORANCE! I pray that this type of ignorance is not being spoken by a person of color. We get beaten up enough by racism for us to beat up our own.
I can't believe some people are so closed minded. Golf is a game that supports many races. The commentators would have to read off of a script to keep from offeding someone. That's bull. The comment made by Kelli was so innocent and with no evil intent. My husband and I truly enjoy her commentary. She is a joy to listen to on TV. Grow up people. Everything said is not meant to offend.
That lady has no idea how offensive her comment was. It speaks to her ignorance.
People have to see that all races have very good athletics. Look at Brett Frave and Tom Brady. So why is it that the lynching always have to be directed at Blacks. A women who attend Duke University should know the word RESPECT. Her words tell me she feels, SHAME ON HER. She should be fired. Mr. Woods over looks it and shows a repsectable, nice person. Ms. Kelly take a lesson from that. Watch your mouth, don't let your feeling for other races be aired. A slip of the tongue doesn't exuse you. Hats off to Mr. Woods.
This should be looked at as a compliment and not a racist statement. When your at the top everone wants a shot at you, it is time for the black comunity to stop looking for any reason to cry about racism and pay more attention to making the community a better and more pleasent place to be regardless of color!
s;ld
This "airhead" should have been fired before she got off the air. If she had made a negtive comment about someone of jewish background that is exactly what would happen to her ass. What is up with all this slips of the tongue comments against Black people. These racist make the comments and then come back to issue an apology like they really mean it. "Africans-In-America" must creat a deframation league that would issue punishment against anyone one that make negative comments toward our communities. We must show that we will not tolerate such statements by no one! That also mean we will no longer allow our own to make comments of this type (i.e, NAS, Damon Wayan, DL Hugley, Jay-Z, Nelly, etc.). This is one reason that these white racists feel they can make these comments. If this "airhead" had made a comment about any subgroup of the white race she would have been fired before she could have flipped her blonde hair behind her ears. It is time for "Real Black" people to take a stand and stop being pussies!!!
anyone who associates the word: lynch with blacks only is not only racist and bigoted, but a complete idiot. i take no offence from this word and my first thoughts are not to try to connect racism with it because the person who said it is white. words are just that and any word or phrase can be associated with racism, but there is one thing that must be present:
THE INTENT TO VERBALLY HARM OR OTHERWISE HUMILIATE THE RACE OR THE PERSON COMMENTED ABOUT.
IN THIS CASE KELLY IS NOT ONLY AN AQUAINTENCE OF TIGER, BUT A GOOD FRIEND AND IS RESPECTED BY HIM. HE IS TOO INTELLEGENT TO BUY INTO SUCH AN IDIOTIC IDEA OF THIS REMARK BEING RACIST. AND AS FOR MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS OUT THERE WHO THINK TIGER IS A SELLOUT OR UNCLE TOM TYPE YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE RACIST.
Anonymous said..."If anyhting, we should get special treatment and priveledges. It's been long enough that whitey's had the good life when's our turn?"
Are you kidding me...when you get off your lazy ass, get some marketable skills that are readily available to you in the free education system, put blood, sweat and tears into the capitalistic society we live in...that's when its your turn.
I go to work everyday at my own company and make a dollar for myself not somebody else. If I succeed, more power to me. If I fail, that's my fault. Either way its all mine.
Get off the couch and out of the welfare line and go get ya some!
In her mind she was paying tiger the ultimate compliment. I took it that way. She demonstrated an insensitivity to blacks, but I can forgive her. She really did not mean it that way. I think Tiger will see it the same way. I was more offended by the "fried chicken and collard greens" comment that Fuzzy made years ago regarding the Masters Dinner. Now there is a guy who doesn't have a clue.
She seems like a nice girl. But she has to realize that you can't say things like that and not expect people to be offended. That was ridiculous and I can't help but wonder why she chose to use that word "lynch".
This site is pathetic!!!!!
For those people who keep defending her by saying there was no malace intent etc. If I knew her personally and stated "I think she should be taken to a back alley and gang raped..that's the ONLY way to stop her". ALL WOMEN and MEN, white, black, latino, asian etc would be outraged and should be. Some of ya'll on here supporting and excusing this womaan are a bunch of damn fools.
Kelly Tighman, native of Myrtle Beach, SOUTH CAROLINA, knew exactly what "lynching" meant. The heifer needs to be strung up by a tree and then she can understand what lynching or saying what you would do to a perceived black man (even if Tiger Woods has no clue) means. Maybe, and only then, will she get a clue that you don't ever state that publicly without having consequences (like loosing your job or being suspended from it).
She needs to be "strung up to a tree"? Damn, that's heavy, but true!!!!!
I cannot believe that someone would write that Ms. Tilghman should be lynched for making that comment. She should be murdered!!!
What is wrong with you? You think someone should be murdered because she made a comment that was offensive to you. Boy that's scary!
Maybe the person who said that the girl should be lynched was joking.....the same way the white girl said that she was joking when she said Tiger should be lynched.
Tiger did the same thing I would have done, nothing. One person can not change the world and we certainly aren't going to come together to do it. So, we should be thankful for people like Al Sharpton who has decided to step up and speak for the weak and the unwilling.
Jesus said in John 8:7..."If any one of you is without sin, let him be the one to throw a stone at her."
All her accusers left and Jesus was alone with her. Jesus forgave her and gave her a command to learn from her sin and live a better way.
Psalm 130:3-4
"If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O LORD, who could stand?
But with You there is forgiveness;
therefore You are feared." (NIV)
We need to receive God's wisdom and offer forgiveness everyday if we are to live together in peace and harmony.
"LOVE is the most durable power in the world. This creative force, so beautifully exemplified in the life of our Christ, is the potent instrument available in mankind's quest for peace and security."

Agree. It was an analogy. She how you got OFFENDED by me wanting to lynch her. Not appropriate huh. Don't have to wait for someone to act out this type of hideous (which means morally offensive or offensive to the senses). As I say time and time again from a LEGAL PERSPECTIVE, the public does not condone offensive speech. If she said it in her home or at a KKK or Neo Nazi rally, she is protected. Saying this offensive characterization of a perceived black man should indeed have her suspended or loose her job. Period!
If the word "lynch" is a part of her everyday venacular and its use was a mere innocent slip of the tongue....well, that's even more scary than if she used it purposely.
I'm an African-American and I'm not a real fan of Woods as a Black man, but I do highly respect him for his accomplishments on the golf course. Maybe this will be a "wake-up" call for Woods and he'll come to the realization that no matter what you accomplish, or how much money you make, or who you choose to marry, you're still Black, and that's the way the world will always see you.
I believe that this is the beginning of a new phase in American race relations. Dr. King's death 40 years ago usered in a period of stagnation and decay with regard to race relations and civil rights in this country. African Americans lost the moral high ground that Dr. King's bright light provided, and that allowed Whites to once again return to a sense of righteousness relative to their position in the society, and Blacks to become complacent in the belief that nothing would change.
The arrival of Tiger Woods and Barack Obama has awakened and brought to the surface, by their very presence, an unresolved conflict which pleages America, and treatens to prevent us from achieving the greatness this country is capable of. This is the greatest humam experiment. Is it possible for people of different backgrounds, who have come together for different reasons, to coexist and develop a mutually beneficial and sustainable society. Believe me the jury is still out.
All parties in this country have some serious work to do. I'm glad to see a more open dialog developing. We have attempted to ignor this issue because it didn't make anyone feel good. We all have a piece of the problem and therefore none of us feel clean.
It is ironic that two men considered by both Blacks and Whites to be of mixed decent to be the catalus for this awakening. It just goes to show how complexed this situation is. Logic would say that everyone in America should take pride in what these Americans have achieved and yet noone is sure that they want to claim them.
In case noone is paying attention, there are forces brewing in the east and if we are not together they will politically and economically swallow us whole.
Why does everyone say that Tiger Woods is black? He's Asian and Black. He has black in him. As well as Asian. He actually doesn't even look black - at all.Has anyone else noticed this? Though the comment Kelli made was total bullshit and unbelievable.
Everyone needs to get real. All the African-American community does is complain about how prejudice America is toward them. Well here's some food for thought: Black people have more charities and benefits than White people. An African-American can complain on national television about all the things he hates about the White man and there is no harm done. Yet when a White woman makes an off-the-cuff comment with no prejudice intentions Black people twist her words around to make her a racist (so they can have something else to complain about) Truth Be Told: African Americans have more benefits and opportunities than any other Race in America and have every chance to succeed (ie. United Negro College Fund). Get off your asses, stop complaining, and take advantage of this great nation. You can all keep hating America, or would you rather still be starving fighting disease in Africa?
